Fleet Reliability - Non-Traditional Performance Monitoring

Most operators publish monthly reliability reports that are full of numbers, tables, rates and statistics. These reports are very informative and detailed – but not very good at summarizing current, significant issues.

A simple way to illustrate the most significant activity of the month is to build a graphical version of David Letterman’s “Top Ten” list. To do this, you simply pareto the most significant issues for each fleet type. This type of graph defines and quantifies the biggest reliability issues affecting the organization.

There are several different pareto charts you may want to consider. One chart would show the top ten pilot-reported problems. Another chart could show the top ten causes of delays and cancellations. Yet another chart could show the top ten reasons why aircraft were not available for the first flight bank of the day.

Regardless of how you choose to identify reliability issues, try to present your data in a user-friendly format. Charts and graphs are the best way to go.
